Little Big Man & Family Ramblings

                                           beefcake

                                            “Yeah, I’m a Beefcake!”

Noah had another appointment today and weighed in at 5 pounds and 2 ounces! He has gained 5 ounces in 4 days! They took him off the human milk fortifier last Thursday, so his weight gain should be just a bit slower now. He tested positive for PKU last week in his genetic screening by the State so had to have the test taken again today to see if perhaps it tested positive because of stress. We’re hoping for the best but are a bit frustrated by all of this. It’s been one thing after another it seems. PKU only happens in like 1 out of 15,000 babies. We are certain that Noah is just fine and that his levels were elevated because of stress. But, if not, at least we are catching the disease early and will prevent any “IQ problems”, as the Doc put it.

Anyhow, in other news… Bella is starting to show some slight signs of envy. She is really whiney suddenly and though very loving towards Noah, she seems a bit hurt that he is taking so much of my time. She is really struggling with going to sleep– be it a nap or at night, she cries when it is time for bed. She also doesn’t understand my need for naps and is so used to being my shadow that she is really hurt when I go into my room without her (and yet with Noah) and shut the door.

I have really worked to make sure that Bella gets one on one still, as she is and always be my girl, so I need that time with her as much as she needs it. Probably more. Every morning we sit at my vanity and I play with her hair while she digs in my makeup bottles, rubs my lotion on her belly, and explores what a eyeliner sharpener does. She lets me do anything I want to her hair, and I love that she doesn’t mind all of my tugging and pulling and re-doing. (Did I mention that I was a real life, honest to goodness beauty school drop out when I was 20? Yep, that’s me!) I can say “Bella, do you want me to do your hair” and she excitedly goes running to my vanity chair. And Austin is so easy to please that I can incorporate him into my “me” time and he is totally cool with whatever I want to do. For instance, tonight I went for a run and he went with. He was content to pant with me, lay in the grass and do all the talking as I breathlessly try to build my endurance at sit-ups again. Towards the end of my run I got fatigued and we ended up walking, laughing and talking along the trail. Seems so long since life has moved slow enough to do that with him, and I’ve missed it.

Anyhow, Noah’s growing and thriving and everything else is coming together. If we can get through this PKU test, we’ll be DONE with all of the hospital needle crap. DONE! Ugggg! Anyhow, I’m plum tuckered, folks. I’ll keep you posted on his PKU test results…

  2. You went for a RUN?! Okay, supermom - how DO you find the energy?
I’m wishing for the best on the PKU results… luckily it’s something that can be controlled by a special diet - but I just hope you won’t have to worry about that!

  3. Running for me these days is more of an animated fast walk. It\’s certainly not the same kind of \”run\” I did a few years ago. I\’m starting slow– I exercised a total of 45 minutes which included 15 minutes walking, 15 running, 5 minutes doing crunches, walking again for the last 10. I feel fantastic though, despite the sleep deprivation. I just want to make the most of my time off, the nice weather, etc. because I always gain 5-10 pounds in the long winters here.  I really need to get rid of the baby fat or I\’ll just end up adding to it in the winter months ahead.

  4. “…tonight I went for a run…” WTF… you’re running? That’s great for you! I would say I can’t run yet because of the c-section, but who am I kidding… I didn’t run before. ;)

Sorry about the PKU test, you are in my thoughts. Poor Noah - that’s a horrible test. Hunter hated his. Noah doesn’t deserve such a rough start. Hang in there girlie!!

  5. Running? The last time I went for a run I was two months pregnant…and he’s two and a half! Good on you!
Lots of hugs to all the little ones, it must be difficult adjusting, particularly for Bella.
