I Want Elephant Ears

When I was a kid, I grew up near Ft. Bragg, N.C. and every year the base had a HUGE fair. It was the most awesome thing to happen to our town since the year before when it came. Everyone and their brother’s uncle was there. I could ride every ride at the fair without it phasing my stomach a bit until I was about 14, when not only was I too cool to ride rides (it might mess up the big bangs I spent hours teasing) but I would get sick beyond words just watching the rides whirl and twirl.

I remember the lovely smell of fried elephant ears wofting through the air and the less fond sound of Metallica and Guns N Roses pumping on huge speakers. Some of the carnival workers were scary and I remember them making gross remarks to the young gals waiting in lines to get onto the rides. Yeah, as if any young gal would look at one of those guys and say, “Yea baby, I’m gonna drop out of junior high and join the carnival so that I can make babies with your toothless ass!” I don’t think that it works like that, but I guess you can’t blame them for trying. I suppose I’d be missing a few teeth myself if I could get my hands on elephant ears every. single. day!

The carnival came to my little town the other day and everyone stopped what they were doing to go. There were only about 8 rides, and Bella was too small for all of the little people rides. They did let her sit on the pink jeep though, and she was really happy about that!

Austin & Jeremy rode this ride. Jeremy got sick as hell afterwards. I’m not kidding, he even had to go to bed when we got home.

And, we can all thank the carni population for the loss of the goppy and sugary elephant ear, as they are now so conscientious of nutrition and dental care that you now have to settle for a flippin’ apple on a stick or a pickle (see picture below). WTF?! Next we’ll be eating tofu hotdogs and sliced celery sticks at baseball games. What’s the world coming to? How about granola and yogurt at the movies? Yummmm!

  2. Yes, I wonder as well! When I saw the title of the post I actually wondered aloud, ‘Why does she want WEEDS?’. Here in Pittsburgh we have these weeds called elephant ears.
Now, me, if I were to yearn for a carnival/fair food it would be the Renn Faire chocolate covered cheesecake on a stick…. which is as close to Heaven from a wheelbarrow dealer as you can get.

  3. Elephant Ears must be a southern thing? They are like funnel cakes, or fried donut batter, with powdered sugar sprinkled all over. Sometimes honey. Ohhhhh, they are a gift from heaven!

If my wife could speak english i think that she will loves to talk to you, i´m say it because of the children.
i was reading your blog, trying to understand everything that you say, i´m mean in order to improve my english, and i found out it interesting, specially because you seems to talk very freely, spontanious.
If i can´t understand what you are saying in english, can i ask you to explain it to me?
How old is Noah? and Bella? Bela in portuguese, my native language means Beautiful, nice name.
My son (Somang Lucas) is 3 years and 2 months old, and my daugther (Shinné Beatriz) is 9 months old.
We live in a very country side city, called Jardim, it´s far way from buildings, subways, departament stores, macdonald´s, but full of nature, it´s called waterland region (Pantanal), here are many cows farms, cowboys, rodeo. I´m studying at the college business administration night time, and day time my main job is be a manager of a sheep farm, i just start it one year ago, sheeps are cute but very hard to take care well.
Few years ago i got a schoolarship in order to go to south korea, i was there for about 2 years, that´s why i can speak some korean too, but i´m not a korean descendent, my wife´s name is Kátia, she is working at the city, she is a children concil, before became adult, the police can´t do much if a children is doing something wrong, or the parents doing something unllegal to the children, that is her job, the difficulty thing is that our salary is not enought to send the children to the kindergarten, and the public services here are very bad, it´s the most difficulty task for us now, that´s why i´m also looking for something abroad, i know that for people from south america to go to US is very difficulty, that´s why i´m looking for something in europe or in any english sponken country.
It´s was a pleasure to meet you, and i´m sorry for has been disturbing you, saying so many things about myself.
You are a very brave and lovely woman, taking care very well your children, congratulations.
