I’ve been tagged by Annika! Unfortunately I don’t know how much quality I can put into this as we are flying out in the morning for a 2 week vacation in the South that I haven’t even started packing for yet I am absolutely all ready for! But I’ll do my best! I change my mind about the answers constantly…
1. Name of a book I have read more than once: Sula by Toni Morrison

My genre of choice is, without a doubt, African American Lit and I’ve never read a book in this genre that didn’t completely captivate me. Sula is so intensely well written, so intense a book period. I don’t know why I read it over again once every year or so because it disturbs me a bit everytime I do. I just think Morrison is such an awesome writer. If you haven’t read it– Do!
2. If I could have one book while stuck on an island, it would be: The Color Purple by Alice Walker
3. A book that made me laugh: High Fidelity by Nick Hornby
4. A book that made me cry: Sophie’s Choice by William Styron
This book haunted me for awhile. It, like Sula, stayed with me long after I finished it. But I’ve read a bunch of books that made me cry. It’s hard to pick one book that made me cry more than the others. I think this book, as a mother, was the most haunting.
5. One book I wish I wrote: Harry Potter Collection (obviously!) by JK Rowling
This writer is one of the most imaginative, creative, colorful, playful, and RICH authors! Maybe a bit over-rated, certainly not the best writer of all time, but damn I appreciate this woman’s brain! She’s brilliant!
6. One book that I think shouldn’t have been written: None
I’ve never, ever read a book that I didn’t like at least a little bit.
7. A book I’m currently reading: Harlot by the Side of the Road by Jonathan Kirsch

I’ve read it many times over and get something a bit different everytime. I’m fascinated by the book because it gives such a different perspective on biblical characters than I was raised learning about while going to a private southern baptist school. I really like this book.
8. One book I’ve been meaning to read: Sons and Lovers by DH Lawrence
9. One book that changed my life: I can’t name just one.

Color Him Father edited by Stephana I Colbert, because it accidentally gave me a new outlook on fathers. It made me happy.
Sweat by Zora Neale Hurston, because I rewrote an alternate ending in college for this that was FANTASTIC! I hate to brag about my writing because, in general, I don’t feel like I have skill. But I do have passion for writing African American Lit and this was the first time I realized that. My Professor couldn’t believe my “gift at African American dialogue” and had me read my ending to the class. I was quite proud. I’m the whitest woman on earth. My skin is so fair that I’m nearly transluscent if it weren’t for my freckles adding a bit of color. But I’m a chittlen cooking, soul food eatin’, big talkin’ southern black woman on paper!
10. I’m supposed to “tag” some folks here but I only know of one person that loves to read that also reads my blog, and that would be Vernicious Knids. So, if any of you would like to participate please do! I tag anyone who wants to be tagged!
And, lastly, I am leaving on a jet plane at 8 am Monday morning (Sept. 11th– YEESH!). I don’t know how many opportunities I will have to post, if at all. If I can find a groovy coffee house there with some wireless internet, I will pop in to say hello and post some pics. Otherwise I’ll be catching you up in a few weeks! Bye for now!
