i think its part of the reason i started gardening, this year i will be canning. my house was built in 1945 so there is a lovely cold room in the basement with shelves and everything. i used to help my granny garden and can and learned a whole lot of skills :)

i too have been stockpiling dried and canned goods and have been for the past year, buying cases when things are on sale and then i rotate when i buy more. its funny because i talked to someone on the weekend who has been doing the same thing. i just want to know that if things do get bad, i can look after us and there's something satisfying about having a totally stocked pantry. all the talk of food shortages are very real and there are countries who are really suffering, we're feeling it at the cash out but at least we have access to food. sigh.

i don't see it as paranoid but rather as smart planning. you put money into investments and rrsp's so why not food and water in the basement. we've been public transit commuting since last september and that has helped the gas situation and now that its warm, we are biking and walking to work. i am so glad that i live so close to the downtown core and only a couple of blocks from the river ... its the little things that give me comfort.

Our church has always encouraged us to have a years supply of food and 72 hour emergency kits. I have the 72 hour kits and stored water, but I need to work on the food... Especially now. Thanks for the reminder.
